Know the signs
- Increased alcohol or drug use

Pain isn't always obvious, but most suicidal people show some signs that they are thinking about suicide. The signs may appear in conversations, through their actions, or in social media posts. If you see one or more of these signs, especially when they behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss or change, step in or speak up.

- Have increased their use of alcohol or are binge drinkers.
- Have attempted suicide in the past.

- Have become isolated from friends, family, society and support systems.
- Are not receiving the mental health care they need

- Alcohol and other substance abuse.
- Feeling helpless, hopeless, or powerless.

- Deep sadness, guilt, or anger
Situational Risk Factors
- Job or financial loss
- Relationship or social loss
- Easy access to lethal means.
- Local clusters of suicide that have a contagious influence.
Social Risk Factors
- Lack of social support and sense of isolation. »
- Stigma associated with helpseeking behavior
- Barriers to accessing health care, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment.
